A message from our tutor: Olofa Iona
My name is Olofa Iona, a Secondary teacher of English and Samoan in Samoa for more than ten years. Deputy Principal of Samoa College from 1998 to 2003 and the English coordinator for Junior Secondary English Curriculum in Samoa in 1989 to 1991. A NZ registered teacher who taught in a Samoan Bilingual Unit for six years, then started teaching in Adult Education as an ESOL tutor at Aorere Community Education Centre at, and a reliever at Dynaspeak English at Te Wananga o Aotearoa since 2011. Became a Samoan educator at the Pacific Education Centre in Manukau and Richmond Road for four years and now would like to continue with the passion of teaching the Samoan language at Mangere East Community Centre.
My qualifications are the Teachers' Certificate from Samoa Teachers' College, Bachelor of Education and Diploma in Education from the National University of Samoa, Diploma in Teaching English as a Second Language from Victoria University, Wellington and Post Graduate Diploma from the University of Auckland.
I am passionate about teaching those who want to learn how to speak and converse in the Samoan language but I am also very keen and interested in teaching intermediate level speakers - where you explore the language in literacy and cultural values from various angles including myths and legends. I am happy to share my expertise of the Samoan way of living and its cultural connotations to who we are today in Aotearoa .
My Samoan Matai titles are Taupau, Tuaopepe, lauvi Auala and Manu'a but I'm commonly known as Taupau to some of my ex students.
